Jeanne Mancini is the president of the largest pro-life event in the world, the March for Life. Every January, nearly half a million people join together on the National Mall and peacefully march past the Supreme Court in protest of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.
Under Jeanne’s leadership, the gathering has become even more diverse and powerful. She has shepherded it into the next generation, with a focus on digital media and engaging younger women. Savvy social media changes, such as introducing the #WhyWeMarch hashtag for the 2015 march, have expanded the reach of the movement and made its message more broadly visible than ever before.
Jeanne realized God was calling her to work in the pro-life arena while studying for her master’s degree at the Pope John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. “Everything I studied that was related to building a culture of life reverberated deeply in my soul,” she says. Jeanne responded to that call, stepping up to take the reins in 2012 after the passing of the March for Life’s beloved founder, Nellie Gray. And although she admits that the sheer magnitude of the march and everything that goes into it can sometimes be overwhelming, she relies on her faith and the dedicated team around her to persevere.
When it comes to encouraging other women to find their voices and speak out on issues that matter, Jeanne points to the words of the great Saint Catherine of Sienna: “Be who you are and you will set the world ablaze.” She tells women to have confidence that they were created with a unique mission. Through prayer and self-reflection, she suggests, we can discern what we were made for, and we should pursue it with all our hearts.
